Your Easy Guide to Menu Item Basics
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
How you structure the layout of your MENU ITEMS will depend a lot on your business model:
- How you sell your MENU ITEMS ( retail, dine-in, takeaway, delivery…)
- Whether you have a customer facing component ( QR Order at Table, Web App, Mob App, Self-ServeKiosk… )
- If you need to send specific MODIFIER details to production ( colour, size, medimm/rare, course level…)
- You want to push add-ons and up-sells ( upsize, combos, companion products…)
- Can you use COMMON MODIFERS instead of RELATED MODIFIERS ? ( All Supreme Pizzas have the same toppings, irrespective of size. So why enter the same list of NO multiple times )
The possibilities are endless, so I recommend an in depth discussion with your support team who have many years of diverse experience for you to utilise.
To paraphrase Stock Control: What It Is and How to Know If It’s Right for Your Business …
“You can make it really complex … more complexity usually means more work. Don’t build an administrative nightmare that costs more to maintain than you get back”
Set Some Defaults
You want to at least set the MAIN TAX to be used.
YumaPOS uses FIFO & is time sensitive. If you get the TAX wrong, all of your reporting will be wrong up until the date & time you fix it.
UNITS OF MEASUREMENT should be decided. Doesn’t really change anything but will make everything more cohesive & look nicer.

Review the Heirarchy
Not a biggie for a simple single-store layout. More complex models may require a bit more mindfulness.
You need to at least know how MENU ITEMS attach to a STORE. If you are using MULTI STORE, then you need to consider PRICE LIST and USER ROLES.

Review Where Cost Comes From
This again depends on your goals and business model.
Will you get away with just using the default cost ?
Do you require more in depth accountability by entering vendor invoices ?
A Quick Guide to Where ITEM Cost Comes From
Create Menu Item Categories
Menu Item Categories are a way to sort your sellable goods & services in a manner that is easy staff and online customers to find and order.
Some examples may include :
- Beer by the can
- Beer by the glass
- Entree
- Mains
- Desserts
- Horse Care
- Entry Tickets

Create Menu Items
MENU ITEMS are the goods and services that you offer your CUSTOMERS. They must belong to a MENU ITEM CATEGORY.
